About
The Late Antique palace Felix Romuliana is one of the most splendid examples of Roman court architecture and is a legacy of Emperor Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximianus (293-311 AD). Located near the village of Gamzigrad, 11 kilometers northwest of Zaječar, this site is renowned for its unique architectural features and the beauty and quality of its preserved artworks, floor mosaics, and sculptures. In 2007, Romuliana was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its exceptional cultural significance.
In its beauty, scale, preservation, and globally significant archaeological findings, the palace surpasses other monuments from that period in Trier, Milan, Thessaloniki, Istanbul, and Nicomedia. The palace floors were covered with high-quality mosaics, the walls adorned with lavish frescoes and panels of precious stone, and the niches filled with sculptures crafted from rare and difficult-to-work stone.
